Description
Playing Outside-A Study in 4ths-Lesson 1 is the beginning of a new lesson series exploring different ways to use patterns in 4th to take a line “outside” the chord changes.
In this lesson, we start working with five 4th patterns in a variety of keys. Although the note sequence is the same, the patterns are written in 2,3,4,5 and 6 note groupings to break up the lines and create more interesting ideas.
The purpose of lesson one is to get the student started down the road to mastery of this interval so that they can use these lines “at will” while improvising.
I demonstrate all the lines on the tenor saxophone and give you tips and ideas on how to best practice them. (33 Minute Video Lesson and PDF 4th patterns)
