Description
This is an introductory lesson on chord substitutions. I talk about the concept of using other chords as you improvise to give yourself fresh ideas. Looking at a chord or progression from a different angle is a great way to change you improvisational ideas to be fresh and new. In this first lesson on chord substitution I talk about the substituting the ii-7 chord within V7 chords. I talk about ways to practice this and to come up with new and fresh lines. I also talk about using the chord substitution rules to simplify a tune like “Satin Doll” and create fresh flowing lines by simplifying the progression in your mind as you improvise. I demonstrate all the concepts with my piano and tenor sax. Enjoy! (Video)
