This is another hard rubber custom mouthpiece from Kanee mouthpieces in China. As I said in an earlier review, I received 7 mouthpieces from Kanee Music to try out. This model is the alto mouthpiece with the lowest baffle. It is called the M5 model for the alto saxophone. Here is what is written about it in the Kanee mouthpiece brochure that comes with it:
“The Kanee M model mouthpiece is a very nice traditional jazz style mouthpiece. We used a Meyer Bros New York as a prototype. The Kanee model M offers a variety of sounds, responses and dynamic ranges. It utilizes a lower baffle to produce a dark, warm and gentle tone.”
Kanee M5 Custom Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece
The first thing I thought when I played this piece was………..Phil Woods. The baffle is lower than the V5 and it has a medium chamber. The sidewalls of this mouthpiece as well are straight which I believes gives it a little more punch and focus to the sound than a typical Meyer. To me it just had that vintage Meyer Phil Woods type of sound. It has a of a darker sound to it than the V5 or Z5. This is the mouthpiece I felt the most comfortable with of the 3 that I tried. It has more of a straight ahead vibe to it. I wouldn’t want to do a rock gig with it but a night of jazz standards would be perfect.
If you like the clip, check out the Kanee site at www.kaneemusic.com for more information. I’m don’t think they are available in the US yet but keep on the lookout for them as I believe they are coming soon.
