This great lesson continues the foundation we laid in Using the Blues Scale Part 1. This is a fantastic lesson for getting the sounds of the blues scale into your ears and under your fingers. I talk about and demonstrate how to actually use the blues scales, rather than just randomly playing them up and down and hoping something good comes out. This lesson helps you lock in on the sounds of the various notes in the scale. I demonstrate the notes of the blues scale against a variety of chords, so you can hear how each note sounds “in context. This is a great lesson for those of you that know your blues scales, but don't really know how to create coherent, flowing solos with them. I also demonstrate how you can add other notes to the basic blues scale and add a whole new level of maturity and variety to your blues playing. I teach you how to practice the Blues Scales in a way that gets you creating great licks and solos, instead of just running scales. You'll hear me use these concepts as I demonstrate how to use them over a basic blues. I emphasize the importance of playing and practicing these ideas with a backing or “play along, so that you can hear the notes in context. This is very important in learning to use the scale and hear what the notes want to do and which way they want to resolve. I continue with the ideas in Using the Blues Scale Part 1 on learning to handle the inherent dissonance, or tension of various notes in the Blues Scale. I show you how to play these notes and resolve them fluently. I also talk about learning and practicing licks and how to create your own licks and use them in your playing. Practice these concepts and you'll be playing the blues with an assurance and maturity you never thought possible. Don't underestimate your basic Blues Scales. Learn these scales. Learn how to play them, and you can play convincingly and authentically over almost every Rock, Pop, Funk, Soul, RnB and Blues tune you'll ever encounter on those Pop/Rock gigs. Master these scales and get the gig!
