The first lesson I ever recorded on Neffmusic.com was "Using the Blues Scale". It was in two parts and was an audio recording. It's been awhile since I made that lesson and I thought it would be a good idea to re-record the lesson as a video lesson. In this lesson I talk in depth about how to use the blues scale over dominant chords and major 7th chords. I talk about each individual note of the scale and how it relates to the chord behind it. I also talk in depth about what I feel are the tendencies of each note and tactics that I use when playing the blues scale over static backgrounds and chords. Part 2 is mainly focused on using the A blues scale over a C7 chord as well as the C blues scale. It also deals with the art of mixing these two scales together to create authentic blues lines. Although this lesson covers the same material as the audio lesson it is different so I'm leaving the audio lesson up so those who may want both can benefit from the two lessons. Enjoy!

In Part 1, Steve does an amazing job at breaking down the notes in the blues scale, explaining how to use each note when soloing. This approach was completely refreshing to me, and instantaneously improved my playing and my ear. Part 2 builds on the first lesson, outlining more options, and most importantly - in my opinion - providing tips on what to play when and how to use the material in a structured way in solos. At the end is a really useful tip on how to practice what's covered. I should mention I had a couple of questions after absorbing Part 1, but these were all answered in Part 2. I'm getting a lot out of Steve's lessons, he's a brilliant, natural teacher. Can't wait to download the next one... |
